Hi we plan to have a 10 days 9 nights trip in Switzerland, will stay in Chur for 2 nights, experience Bernina Express, 2 nights in Zermatt and will take Glacier express from Chur. There are another 5 nights, we wish to stay in same hotel, so that no need to bring along luggages for staying in Chur and Zermatt. Plan to check-in the same hotel in the first day and last 4 days. Any suggestion which city is good as base for the 5 nights stay, we have Bern, Lucern or Zurich? Thank you

My wife and I were in Switzerland for 10 days in September. While we travelled from place to place we did stay in Zurich for 5 nights. You can easily reach Bern and Lucerne on day trips from Zurich, and Zurich is wonderful. We did have Swiss Rail Passes so there was no problem with extra rail expense. Both Old Town Bern and Old Town Lucerne are great, I highly recommend all three cities.

A:
Follow Parking sighs. They are all over in downtown. Especially near the train station. That’s probably the best spot.

The Tourist Office in the main railway station has plenty of free maps and guides and also does free or very cheap guided walks , recommended. They also speak good English and are very helpful. It is a safe city to walk around and navigation is very easy too. Don't forget to go out past the barenpark for spectacular evening views of the city.

We do not have a full day in Bern (May 2017) as we are driving through on our way to Lucerne so was wondering if there are few things anyone can recommend to do in Bern in a couple of hours, may be just see the important places from outside as we wont have time to visit any attraction or places but would like to take the opportunity to drive through the city of Bern. Also, is it possible to drive through the old town or is the old town restricted for vehicles?

Hey- you can drive. I'd recommend parking at the Bahnhof and then exploring the town centre on foot. There is plenty to see in the central area, all within walking distance (the Bundeshaus, Zytglogge, Nydeggkirche etc). My favourite street to walk down was Marktgasse and Kramgasse, due to the lovely architecture. Perhaps walk east to the Nydeggbrucke, cross over the bridge and follow the southern path along the River Aare until you reach the Kirchenfeldbrücke bridge that leads back into the centre of the town. You can get great views of the Munster from the south side of the river. Enjoy.
Q:
How much time required to see around the old town
A:
Including going up to the rose garden and watching the bears at Bear park for a little while - I would say you can do it in about 2-3 hours.
