Starlink, a satellite internet provider constructed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, suffered a network outage Thursday, according to the company.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has bought Starlink services — but also fell into the crosshairs of Musk. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in 2024, Musk said FEMA was blocking deliveries of the terminals, a claim the agency called false. FEMA did not respond to repeated requests for comment on its use of Starlink.

"Starlink is currently in a network outage and we are actively implementing a solution," it said in a post on X. The service will be restored soon, Musk said on X. "SpaceX will remedy root cause to ensure it doesn't happen again.

At present, the Starlink satellite constellation possesses a combined network capacity of almost 450Tbps, with a median peak latency of 25.7 milliseconds for American customers, thanks to its strategically placed gateway sites. The company hopes to reach a stable 20 millisecond median latency soon.

The Guowang constellation, also known as Xingwang, is the Chinese central government’s official response to Starlink. Administered by China SatNet under the state-owned aerospace conglomerate CASIC, the project envisions a network of over 13,000 satellites providing secure, high-speed internet for civilian and military use.
