In a press release, SEGA announced that the Sonic the Hedgehog film series has now hit the $1 billion milestone in global revenue. The announcement was made by SEGA President and COO, Representative Director Shuji Utsumi, that the Sonic the Hedgehog film series has now grossed over $1 billion ( (¥157B) in the global box office.

And even three movies and broken box office records later — including a brand-new benchmark as of yesterday evening — Sonic the Hedgehog 3 star Ben Schwartz can't help but joke about what could have been.

Disney's "Lion King" prequel is No. 1 at the domestic box office after trotting behind "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" for two consecutive weekends.
