Brown University announced on Wednesday that it has rejected the Trump administration’s Compact for Academic Excellence despite signing a resolution agreement with the federal government in July. The administration offered Brown and eight other schools an optional agreement requiring the schools to refrain from hiking tuition prices and using illegal race-based preferences in admissions in exchange for preferential treatment in grant

The battle for academic freedom and institutional sovereignty in higher education continues to play out as another university has rejected a White House offer for expanded access to federal funding in return for agreeing to a series of demands.

Penn is the third school to say no to the Trump administration’s offer of federal funding preferences in exchange for complying with certain requirements, such as protecting conservative voices.
