Alongside new information about the Switch 2, Nintendo officially announced a new peripheral – the Switch 2 Camera.

The Nintendo Switch didn’t make it easy to let you connect with friends and strangers over the internet. The Switch 2, on the other hand, is fully embracing connectivity. To that end, a stand-up camera will be launched alongside the Switch 2 on June 5 that can be used with its GameChat feature.

OK, obviously cameras are not a new innovation in console gaming, and Nintendo themselves have experimented with them before with the DSi and various other devices. But the moment the Switch 2 Direct’s video started showing how it intended to use a camera, everything started getting that notorious Ninty weirdness. I smiled big.

Starting next season, a system of cameras will determine whether to award a first down rather than trot out a 10-yard chain. Calls for technology assistance in placing the football grew louder after January's AFC Championship Game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills.

During the 2025 season the NFL will determine whether teams have reached a first down by using Sony’s Hawk-Eye system of six, 8K cameras that will optically track the position of the ball.
