(Reuters) -Ukrainian drones launched a night-time attack on Russia's western Kursk region, damaging a hospital and apartment buildings and injuring at least one person, the regional governor said early on Friday.

Ukrainian forces made a surprise incursion into Kursk in August 2024, before being pushed out by Russian troops nine months later.

The military described the Kursk campaign as an "unexpected and asymmetric" move that helped fill the so-called "exchange fund" — Ukrainian terminology for captured Russian soldiers who can be traded for Ukrainian POWs.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s helicopter came under fire from Ukrainian drones during a visit to Kursk, the Kremlin admitted.

The report, quoting Yuri Dashkin, Commander of the Air Defence division in Kursk Oblast, said that the Ukrainian military launched an unprecedented attack at the aircraft, with Putin onboard.
