The 82-year-old Kentucky senator fell twice at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday but appeared to suffer no major injuries.

Moments after Mitch McConnell voted to confirm President Donald Trump's pick for HUD secretary, the 82-year-old Kentucky senator fell down the stairs, according to multiple reports.

McConnell stepped down from his Senate leadership position last year. McConnell was voting to confirm Scott Turner as the secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Turner, a former NFL player and Texas representative, was confirmed by the Senate Wednesday in an 55-44 vote.

A spokesman for McConnell said the 82-year-old senator is "fine" and using a wheelchair “purely as a precautionary measure."

McConnell, now in his seventh term representing Kentucky, recently stepped down from his post as the GOP's Senate leader, a position he had held since 2007. He plans to remain in the Senate through the end of his term, which expires at the end of 2026. But he has not announced whether he will seek reelection.

Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.), who will succeed McConnell as Senate GOP leader in January, told reporters following the weekly Senate GOP policy luncheon that McConnell is “fine” and “in his office.” He referred any questions about McConnell to the senator’s staff.

A spokesperson for the former Senate leader said he was fine and the "lingering effects of polio" won't disrupt his work.
