The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is banning a synthetic food dye that gives foods and drinks a pop of bright red color.

As pressure grows to get artificial colors out of the U.S. food supply, the shift may well start at Abby Tampow’s laboratory desk.

Red dye No. 3 is now banned in the US -- but it'll take time to phase it out completely. In the meantime, the FDA just approved these three natural food colors to take its place.
