Newsom announces California redistricting push, setting up a standoff with GOP-led opponents
Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled his plan to redraw the state’s congressional maps in response to a Republican-led effort in Texas Thursday, setting up a standoff against a coalition of opponents.
A spokesperson for Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas said their office is aiming to release possible redrawn maps on Friday.
Maps made public Friday afternoon show how California Democrats hope to reconfigure the state’s 52 congressional districts. The plan targets five of California’s nine Republican members of Congress, and is designed to counteract the redistricting efforts in Texas that would favor Republicans.
Voters will be tasked with approving new congressional maps in a special election in November, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced.
Democrats have struggled to find effective ways to oppose President Donald Trump, and even some Democratic voters describe the party as weak.
The latest POLITICO-Citrin Center-Possibility Lab survey found that strong majorities in both parties prefer an independent panel draw the House district lines.

The cost for a special election in Riverside County “typically ranges between $15 million to $16 million,” said Elizabeth Florer, a registrar’s office spokesperson. Riverside’s registrar of voters’ office, Florer added, “anticipates increased workload and will require additional resources should a special election be called.”
