A child who was hospitalized with measles in Texas has died, state health officials said this week. It marks the first death in the state's latest outbreak — the largest such outbreak in close to 30 years — which has left more than 140 people infected.

Measles was considered to be eliminted in the U.S. in 2000, thanks to vaccine developments. But vaccination rates have dropped since the covid pandemic began.

The Texas measles outbreak is up to 146 cases in 9 counties. DSHS has disputed reports of cases in Mexia ISD, Cibolo and Rockwall.
