Welcome to the National Blue Ribbon Schools historic database containing about 10,000 awards given to over 9,000 schools across the nation. The program began in 1982 and the first awards were given out in 1983.

Secretary Bell created the National Blue Ribbon Schools Award to bring exceptional U.S. schools to public attention and to recognize those schools whose students thrived and excelled.

Jan 14, 2025 · The U.S. Department of Education recognized 356 schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2024. This recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student groups on assessments.

Sep 24, 2020 · The coveted National Blue Ribbon School award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities that are creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content.

Both public and non-public schools are eligible for the National Blue Ribbon Schools award based on school performance. Schools may be nominated as either Exemplary High Performing, Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing, or in both categories if they meet the criteria for both.

View the 2024 Blue Ribbon School Winners National Blue Ribbon Schools are honored each year at a recognition ceremony in Washington, DC. The applications from the award-winning schools are posted on the Department Web site.
