Oct 6, 2023 · Meandering over 150 miles of picturesque terrain, this rugged, stately rail line traverses a magnificently diverse portion of Idaho, from a roller coaster of rural farmland near Grangeville to lush pine-scapes near Lewiston. Today, this fantastic line is no longer in use.

The Nezperce & Idaho Railroad (reporting mark NP&I) was an independently owned short line railroad that connected the community of Nezperce to the Camas Prairie Railroad. Primarily used to ship agricultural products it operated from 1910 until 1975, [ 15 ] [ 16 ] it was then used for boxcar storage until the 1980s.

Jan 29, 2025 · “The railway united communities such as Spokane, Lewiston, Lapwai, Spalding, Craigmont, and Grangeville.” In some areas, the railroad’s trestles towered over 50 feet – passing over small towns and earning the nickname “The Railroad on Stiltz.”

Dec 5, 2017 · This 23-mile section of the railroad clings to the side of Lapwai Canyon and climbs from 1589 ft elevation at Culdesac to 3665 ft elevation at Craigmont. The builders conquered this rugged terrain using 17 bridges and 7 tunnels!

Jun 14, 2011 · One of its most iconic features was the route through Lapwai Canyon. This line, with its many bridges, tunnels and severe curves (the curve across Half-moon bridge was 17 degrees!), was one of the railroad’s many scenic marvels.

The Camas Prairie Railroad operated as many as seven trains east of Lewiston. Locals operated both directions between Lewiston and Kamiah (pronounced Kam-ee-eye). The first subdivision is a water level route, with gentle grades, following the Clearwater River.
