The settlement of Skegness probably has its origins in the Anglo-Saxon period. It gained in size and importance as a seaside holiday and bathing resort in the late 19th century.

Skegness's oldest buildings are the medieval churches of St Clement, in Skegness, and St Mary, in Winthorpe. St Clement's has a 13th-century tower; the rest of the building may be medieval, but probably dates to the mid-16th century when it is thought to have been rebuilt.
