For a Field Geobiology class project, I chose to explore evaporite minerals forming in the Great Salt Lake, UT. The mineral I found to be most abundant in White Rock Bay of Antelope Island was a hydrated sodium sulfate that I identified as mirabilite. In mapping its occurrences and analyzing groundwater chemistry, I discovered that it was forming in and around clusters of hypersaline brine sinkholes.
