Walking through the gatehouses at Brougham Castle The double gatehouse is an unusual feature of a castle. The outer and inner gatehouses are separated by a courtyard, passing through the two gatehouses will lead you to the central courtyard. The inner gatehouse was built first, it contained a portcullis and postern gate. The outer gatehouse had a room for guards whilst the courtyard contained lodgings that face the River Eamont.
