Tucked away on a bend of the River Tees, the ruins of St Lawrence’s Chapel are all that remain of the medieval village of Barforth — a place once, and wrongly, called Old Richmond. The chapel dates back to the 12th century, serving the manorial estate for hundreds of years before falling into ruin.
