I like patients to be responsive before I remove the breathing tube after they're done with surgery. this helps reduce complications, such as laryngospasm and aspiration. there are many exceptions to this rule, of course, but in general, I want patients to be comfortable when their breathing tube is coming out, and able to protect their airway! | Anthony Kaveh MD
