On this day in history, December 18, 1947, the @PowellTribune reported a large majority passed a half-million dollar bond for more school facilities to relieve overcrowding. During PHS Alumni weekend, the Homesteader Museum presented a powerpoint on the history of the Powell schools. Through much research, in 1947, an educational planning committee recommended that the district build a new elementary school on the west side of town (Parkside), a new gymnasium, and an athletic field. In this video Navajo Historian, Wally Brown, shares about the beginning of Lake Powell. The young interpreter that was there when the Federal Government made a deal with local Navajo people shared his story with Wally years later. The Government didn't keep their part of the deal with the Diné. This is one of the stories that needs to be told.
