One of the most popular exhibits at the Sacramento History Museum is the trunk that belonged to May Hollister Woolsey. May Woolsey was born November 13, 1866 and died on September 21, 1879 of viral encephalitis, likely stemming from a mosquito bite, when she was twelve years old. May’s grieving parents gathered up her childhood belongings, placed them in a trunk, and sealed it in a wall under the staircase of their home at 916 E Street, creating a time capsule of a child’s life in Sacramento in

Shawn gives an update on how the Sacramento River looks this week viewing from the West Sacramento side opposite of Old Sacramento. The river is a lot higher than a couple weeks ago due some recent storms. Rain has subsided for now but we are in for some more rain in the near future. Please note, we did have some slight issues with our audio equipment. Offering content on location in a variety of weather conditions sometimes has its setbacks. #SacHistoryMuseum #museum #sacramento #history #oldsa

Students are back at school and field trip season has begun at the Sacramento History Museum! We have a variety of educational school programs that are available in-person at our museum, as a virtual field trip, and also as outreach programs in the classroom. In this video, Zoey gets the word out about school programs by letterpress printing a phrase using our Washington hand press. The phrase “Sign up TODAY!” was typeset in 72 point Caslon font. #SacHistoryMuseum #fieldtrip #sacramento #typogra

Happy “official” 176th birthday, Sacramento! On February 27, 1850, Sacramento became an incorporated city in the territory of California. California, however, did not become a state until September 9, 1850. Sacramento City was founded along Sacramento River’s waterfront, where Old Sacramento is today, in December 1848 when John Sutter Jr. and Samuel Brannan hired Captain William H. Warner, Lt. William Tecumseh Sherman, and Lt. Edward O. Ord to survey the land from Sutter’s Fort to the Sacramento

The @NBA season has started and we here at the Sacramento History Museum are, of course, #SacramentoProud. In honor of the start of the season, Howard letterpress printed something for the @Sacramento Kings. This electrotype clearly shows its age because basketballs stopped having laces in the late 1930s. The font is 24 point Caslon. #nba #SacHistoryMuseum #sacramento #museum #basketball #typography #nba2k22 #letterpress

Sacramento History Museum on Instagram: "We like to keep a variety of fresh prints around for our viewers to pick up when they stop by the Sacramento History Museum. This one press run was done to have prints ready for our Kids’ Day event happening today, November 9th, until 2pm. In this press run, Jared letterpress printed an image from a modern photo engraving based on a lithograph of Sacramento’s Waterworks building from 1857. Our museum is housed in a reconstruction of that building, which w
